What is Wholesale Business and Wholesaling - What is a Wholesaler ?

 Wholesale Meaning

wholesale, wholesaler, wholesale meaning, wholesaler meaning, wholesale definition, wholesaler definition

What is Wholesale Business - Wholesale is the selling of good and merchandise to retailers and large business entities in large volumes at a lower price and low profits. As the business volume is high, the profits are very thin in the wholesale business. We have some wholesalers retailers for example Walmart, Carrefour, Walmart's Best Price, Reliance Market and Metro Cash and Carry in India.

How is Wholesale different?

1) Wholesalers sell only to a business and not to the end-users.
2) Wholesalers don't sell in small quantities and they sell in bulk
3) Wholesalers don't give much emphasis on the display of merchandise.
4) Location of the wholesaler is not of much importance.
5) Visual Merchandising is not of much importance on wholesale

Sometimes wholesalers will also serve the customers, for example, Walmart and Metro Cash and Carry store sell to end-users also, here they are both retailer and wholesaler. Another example of this is Apple, we can purchase Apple products in Apple Exclusive stores, through Apple Website and also in Walmart outlet. Here Apple will operate as a Manufacturer, Wholesaler and Retailer.

Difference Between Retail & Wholesale:

1) Retailers sell goods to end-users, whereas wholesalers sell goods to business entities and the retail industry.

2) Retailers sell in small quantities at a high price, whereas Wholesalers sell goods in bulk at relatively low prices.

3) Retailers sell goods at high margins to cover all the costs involved and wholesaler sell the products at low margins.

4) Retailers adopt B2C model, Business to Customers model - wherein retailer receive products from business(wholesaler) and sell the products to consumers. Wholesalers adopt B2B model - purchase the goods from the manufacturer and sell them to other business entities and retailers in bulk.

5) Competition is very high in the retail business because retailer care for the customer experience, whereas the competition in wholesale is comparatively low.

6) Retailers spend a lot in marketing and advertising costs, this is not in the case of wholesalers as they don't spend much on advertising.

7) Another major difference is that the wholesaler typically deals with a limited set of products, whereas the retailer has a different set of products at a time.

Benefits of Wholesale:

Saves Money: Buying products in bulk will help us to save money, which means we can get the products for less and sell them more. As the cost involved in marketing and advertising is less - a considerable amount of money is saved.

Helps to build a network of suppliers: Prompt delivery from supplier or manufacturer and quick payments will help in building relationships which are very much essential for long term business.

Helps to achieve expertise: With research and selling specific products, you become n expert in the specific area. By selling specific category you gain knowledge about the industry which is very important to gain the trust of the customers. Use this knowledge with your online customer community that will help customers to purchase the products from you.

Will help in expanding business: Once you settle down in your industry you will start to see connections with the other markets. This connection will definitely help in upselling and cross-selling opportunities that will help your business to gain even more success. The expansion will be very easy as you would have set your brand and established the market. These new ventures will be quick and easy when compared to setting up a new business.
