How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" Interview Question

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF

Tell Me About Yourself is the most common and guaranteed question in any of the interview processes. We know that this question will be the first question in all types of interviews but still, most of the candidates go unprepared for this question. 

There are certain rules or rather I would say there are some tips we should remember when we are answering this question:

1. Keep the Introduction Short - Finish the answer with 60 to 70 seconds. If you drag about yourself then the interviewer might get bored.

2. There are 2 ways to answer this question - Start from your present and go descending covering your past experience and education or you can start from your past and go ascending covering till your present expertise and work.

3. Don't memorize the answer - be natural and practice this every till the day you become perfect in this introduction.

4. The answer should be according to the role and company.

5. Be crisp and clear in telling about yourself, don't summarise your resume in front of the interviewer.

6. And, remember that it is your first impression - it will matter a lot in your further interview process as it will set the expectation

Possible Answer Number 1: Here we are adopting past to present approach in answering the question -

“Hi, I am Rajeev Sharma. I am from Mumbai. I completed my Post Graduation in Business Management from Indian Business School which is affiliated to Delhi University. I completed my twelfth grade from Dehradun Public School with 89% from CBSE Boards. 

My family includes my father who is an engineer by profession, my mother who is a homemaker, and my brother who is pursuing his MS in Computer Science Delhi University. I love playing table tennis and I have represented my school in various district and state-level competitions. 

I am also a part of the Rotary Club and I have regularly and actively participated in community service during my free time at various schools teaching the underprivileged. Being part of this community has helped me in developing a different perspective towards my life which makes me appreciate what I am and where I am today.”


Possible Answer Number 2: Here we are adopting present to past 
approach in answering the question -

“Hi, My Name is Akshay Mehta. I am from Bengaluru. I am working in Infotech Technologies as Sales Supervisor for the past 3 years. Before this I was working with IBM as Sales associate for 2 years. 

During my stint with these organizations, my responsibilities included selling computer and its parts. I had an opportunity of heading a team of 5 members. 

Here, I would like to emphasize the fact that my team has always outperformed the other teams in our organization and we have managed to spike the sales each and every quarter. For this achievement I have received several awards in both my present and previous organization. 

And about my qualification, I have graduated from Karnataka University in B.Sc. Computer Science. And about my family, my parents work with Private Sector and I have as sister who is completing her Pre University”
