What is signage and what is its purpose?

We see signage in our daily life, and they are an essential part of our life. You will come across signages while you are traveling to work, and also you will find signages in your workplace.

So what exactly is signage? Signage is generally, any kind of graphic display, or we can say that it is the visual graphics that convey specific information to the customers, or to the public in general.

So in retail signage will convey information about your business, and about your products. Signage will differ in form and size in retail stores, based on the various factors like store format, location, and whether it is external signage or internal signage, and so on. Most of the retailers have digital signage in the retail store to highlight the store facade and to hight the brands inside the store to highlight individual brand fixtures.

So the main purpose of the signage is to communicate non-verbally. Signage will help to promote, provide information, give directions, or they will help in raising safety awareness.

What is the role of signage in retail:
  • With prominent and distinctive signage is the customers can easily locate the retail store.

  • The signboard of the store will help with all the necessary information about the store, the customer with the help signboard can easily locate the products or segment in the retail store without the help of anyone.

  • All the visual displays, put in the store will help customers to easily locate the specific product category in the retail store.

  • The signboards are an effective medium of communication between the customer and the retailer. It gives the store a unique brand identity, which will differentiate the retail stores from the competitors.

  • The bigger the signage, the bigger the impact of the retail store on the minds of customers. Big is always beautiful and it will draw the attention of the customers towards our retail store.

  • Signages are also used inside the store to communicate about the promotional offers or promotional activities running in the store.

Apart from this, the most important use of signage is to help in communicating the price of the merchandise and corresponding offers for a particular product:

For example, let us see in the Signage where the price of the product is mentioned along with the product description, MRP, and the saving on the product.

Here the Price of the product is Rs 179 and the offer price is Rs 159, so the saving is Rs 20 as mentioned in the below price signage.

In Retail, there are basically 4 types of price signage depending: on the type of the offer which are: OUR PRICE signage, Percentage % OFF signage, SAVINGS signage, and B'X'G'Y' signage ("Buy 1 Get 1" or "Buy 2 Get 2" or "Buy 1 Get 2")

In % Off signage, as shown below, the % savings is displayed prominently with Bold Fonts and other parameters are mentioned in small fonts as shown below.

In the below signage - Savings Signage, the amount saved on the product is displayed in bold fonts or we can say that the amount saved - SAVINGS is highlighted prominently in the signage as shown in the below signage.

Here the offer may be B1G1 or it may be B1G2 or it may be B2G2 free, this depends on the product you are buying and also the type of merchandise you are buying. Sometimes it may be B1G1 shirt free or it may be Buy 2 trousers and Get 2 Shirts free, this entirely depends on the store format and what offers are running in that particular retail store.
