What is Night Shift Operations in Retail?

The activities that take place after customer shopping hours or when the shop is closed for customer buying activity are called Night Shift Operations.

These are the work or important activities that need to be completed on priority and cannot be performed during normal working hours when the store is full of staff and customers. These must be completed within a stipulated time period.

Examples of Night Shift Operations are:

- Stock count - Perpetual Inventory count system - here the entire stocks of the store are counted to check the shrinkage of the retail store.
- Visual merchandise work like fixing of signage - Changing the artwork or visual communication of the store
- Merchandise activity - This refers to the replenishment activity - big hypermarkets carry out merchandising or stocking activity in the night times

Night Shift Operations: How Is It Carried Out

Store Manager or Assistant department manager [ADM] or above must request for the night shift
  • Area Manager and must authorize the activity 
  • Also, the Loss Prevention Team must be a part of Night Shift Operations as they will monitor any unusual activities
The closing manager will do the below activities before handing over the store to the Night Shift operations team:
  • Closing Manager Signs the key movement register
  • Hands over his set of keys to the manager assigned for the night shift operation
  • Details must be recorded in the store closing register
The manager in charge of the operations must

- Accept from the closing manager and record/ sign in the key
movement register
- Hand over authorization of the night shift operations the night
security supervisor
- Supervisor and be physically present throughout the night shift
operation
- Ensure only authorized work is carried out
- Hand over the keys to the closing manager the next day
- Recorded details in the store closing register

Maintenance staff must:

- Be present during night shift operations
- Ensure that only required lights and AC is switched on

Important Facility to be available for Night Shift Staff:
  • Vending machines must be switched on to ensure there is tea/coffee service for the team and washrooms must be functional for night shift staff at any given point of time.
The night security supervisor has to perform the below activities to ensure smooth functioning of the Night Shift:

- Cross verifies the work details with the authorized work details
of the manager responsible for the night shift operation
- Ensures that there is no unauthorized movement in the other sections
- Patrols the area inside and outside the store frequently during the course of the operations
- Frisks all staff when they exit the store

Security staff must make sure he adheres to below points:

- Be alert and monitor all activities strictly
- Regulate the movement of people working
- Secure all other perimeter doors and allow staff to enter/exit
from the main staff entry/exit door
- Ensure the store is clear of all people after the activities are over
- Assist the night shift operations manager to carry out store
closing as per SOP standards
